Yesterday (June 26) was Dave Grusin’s 89th birthday—happy birthday to one of the all-time greats!
I got into Grusin later than I did other composers, because most of his career was spent doing smart, contemporary scores for adult-themed pictures, and I just didn’t discover them until I was older.
I was so glad we were able to release The Yakuza at FSM—and check out the reissue from Varèse Sarabande which fixes a few things with masters were were unable to find at the time.
I can’t possibly do justice to his art and career on the fly. But check out this cover of one of his 1960s TV themes, The Name of the Game:
This is a certain kind of genius at work, to make something his cool and catchy!
Thank you, Dave!
I would've loved to hear a Dave Grusin Star Trek score. The cool boppin' Enterprise, the sexiest starship around.
