I love this: an audio engineer has located and uploaded the original take of the famous “Wilhelm scream,” a sound effect created for the 1951 Florida adventure, Distant Drums (performed by Sheb Wooley) and recycled in countless films—particularly the Star Wars films, thanks to sound editor and guru Ben Burtt.
It’s named after its use in the 1953 western The Charge at Feather River, when “Private Wilhelm” gets shot in the thigh by an arrow.
You can listen to the series of takes inside this article.
