I am so excited to see Disclosure Day tomorrow for many reasons—but here’s one you might not have thought of. As far as I am aware, this film is set in the present day (or very near future).
Since Jurassic Park and its sequel, Spielberg has directed 19 films. Know how many have been set in contemporary reality? Just three: the airport-bound comedy The Terminal, War of the Worlds and now Disclosure Day. Everything else is period.
This wasn’t always the case. Most of his initial movies—Sugarland Express, Jaws, Close Encounters, E.T.—were set in contemporary America. And among his many gifts, Spielberg has an eye and a knack for the texture and absurdities of the everyday world. It grounded his work in a way that you just don’t get from the historical movies.
So I am hopeful that as a man and artist who has remained vibrant and curious, we get more of that magic tomorrow. Because the world of the 1970s is long gone, and I’m fascinated to see what he observes and skewers from the present.
