John Williams and Film Music

I’m sure we’ve all seen the headlines about how John Williams doesn’t like film music, inspired by Tim Greiving’s new biography where Williams says as much. Tim wrote a piece in The Hollywood Reporter that I think clarifies it well.
I’ve kind of been cringing the entire time because I’m sure it’s exactly why he didn’t want a biography written about him. He shares a private opinion, over months and years of interviews, that’s now taken out of context and sensationalized and risks complicating his immaculate public image. Unfortunate.
I can’t think of very many people who like their profession enough to do it for free. I’m just imagining being so skilled and talented that I could legit think to myself, “Jeez, I guess I gotta go crank out another score for Spielberg. Sh*t, there goes my afternoon.”
