One of the weird things about being a lifelong Star Trek fan is that you measure time by the cycle of reruns.
There are 79 episodes of The Original Series, so in daily syndication, the show generally plays through four times a year. You watch the characters start out fresh faced and young, age three years (as the quality declines, sadly), then BOING! They are young again.
The Next Generation has 178 episodes, so it has only two cycles a year. And it’s a different experience, as the latter five seasons are consistent and strong, and then when the first two seasons show up again, Riker is baby-faced and the quality is all over the place.
All the classic Trek shows play nightly on the H&I cable channel six times a week, so I often end my day by seeing which TOS and TNG episodes are playing.
TNG is airing the two-part “Unification” now, and it reminds me of my peak interest in the show, circa 1991, when I was trying to write fan scripts and submit them.
I don’t really have a point to make—a prerogative of doing a daily blog—but it very much connects me to my younger self, and how immersed I was in this show. I remember the experience of each new episode, being delighted and entertained (and sometimes disappointed) and how much more fun and interesting the Star Trek universe seemed compared to my actual life.
Thank you, Star Trek!
