I am loving Winning Time! And I say that as a lifelong Boston sports fan.
The title sequence is terrific:
I had been unsure whether the song was uniquely created for the show—it wasn’t. It is “My Favorite Mutiny” by The Coup, featuring Black Thought and Talib Kweli (I have no idea who any of those people are).
But thanks to whosampled.com, I now know it’s based on a sample from Lenny Williams’ “Half Past Love” from 1978.
It’s a great fit for the show.
Along these same lines, does this opening passage sound familiar?
It’s Enoch Light’s arrangement of “Autumn Leaves”—yes, the main sample (and heart of the piece) to “A Beautiful Mine” by RJD2, which became the theme to Mad Men.
Here’s more from Ethan Hein, who I remember from our time at Amherst College in the 1990s.
