Coming in 2025: The Douglass Fake CD Collection

Writer's picture: Lukas KendallLukas Kendall

This is not an announcement I ever thought I’d be making...and one that is really quite emotional...so let me try my best to tackle it.

When Douglass Fake of Intrada Records passed away last July, he left behind not only a decades-long legacy of preserving and promoting film music, and thousands of worldwide friends and admirers (including me!), but a personal CD collection of astonishing breadth and comprehensiveness.

I remember seeing it downstairs in Doug’s home studio (he had one of those “upside-down” houses, in the Oakland hills), and just being dazzled by the walls and walls of CDs.

I had visited him several times over the years, and after going over work and production matters at the office and/or a restaurant, the best part of the trip was just listening to music on Doug’s super-duper home stereo system and hearing him narrate what made it so exceptional. (For some reason, the cue that comes to mind right now is something from Goldsmith’s The Boys From Brazil, years before Intrada’s 2CD set made it available to everybody.) He was one of the best I’ve ever heard at pointing out musical and orchestrational details, and explaning them in an accessible way. And he seemed to have everything at his fingertips.

Now that Doug is no longer with us, his thousands of CDs need relocation, and the team at Intrada have decided that my store at FSMCDs.com is uniquely suited to the challenges of processing and selling as many as 5,000 or even 6,000 distinct CDs. (We don’t have an accurate count yet.)

So we have accepted the challenge—not happily, but because it must be done, and this is the best way to help all of you, the world’s passionate soundtrack collectors, as well as Doug’s business and family.

So today’s big announcement is that we will be working on this over the coming weeks. It is a big logistical job to get the discs packed up and trucked down to Los Angeles, after which we’ll organize them, replace any cracked jewel boxes, create our spreadsheet of titles and prices, and offer them to you.

We have a big collection coming in first which we’ll be offering in January. Then I would expect Doug’s CDs in February or March at the latest.

I want to thank Intrada for trusting us, and we will put our best efforts into conducting the sale, and taking the opportunity to remember Doug and honor his legacy.

In other store news, we will be open through Monday, December 23rd, to process and ship any orders that come in. Then because of the holidays, we have to pack up everything until a date TBD the first week of January.

We have a ton of great stuff in stock at the moment (including hard to find box sets), so check out the listings at www.fsmcds.com, or if it’s easier to browse a spreadsheet of the inventory, go here.

Thank you to everybody who have made our inaugural year such a success.

Doug was part of the negotiations that changed the royalty structures to get more music out of the vaults and into the collections of fans.

Lukas,

I'm not really into soundtrack collecting anymore, but I was saddened at the news about Mr. Fake. Over the years I've looked forward to the boxes from Intrada.

Well, you know.

I'm glad you've been trusted to take care of his collection. THE BOYS FROM BRAZIL is another Goldsmith expansion that made the music seem like a new work. I liked the vinyl arrangement, but the CD expansion (like every JG expansion) is like a new, fresh work.

If I can scrounge up a few bucks I'll check your site.

Best,

JSW

Lukas, I appreciate and empathize with the different levels of loss and ambivalence which both the Fake family and you are experiencing with this prospect. (This comes from a devoted customer of Intrada who never met Doug in person but enjoyed very much a few e-mail exchanges over the years, as well as all those "Tech Talks" inside CD booklets.)

Years ago after the death of my own Golden-Age mentor (whom I still miss), his survivors relied on me to identify and list on eBay for them the rarest and most valuable CDs among his own extensive collection. But because your own bond to Doug Fake is far more personal than most of your (mutual) customer base shared, I offe…
