DS9 Resolution

I’ve been watching a few Deep Space Nine episodes on the nightly Star Trek lineup from the Heroes & Icons channel. I still have not seen the majority of DS9 or Voyager episodes, because it coincided with the one time in my life—college and right after—when I didn’t have a television set.

Yes, really—I was such a huge TV junkie as a kid, it seems crazy to think I went cold turkey, but I did. Our college, at the time, only had a few dorms wired for cable, and aerial reception was very poor in the Pioneer Valley of western MA.

And I’m sorry, but it’s distracting to watch DS9 with the blurry SD resolution. It’s such a shame this show (which I hear nothing but good things about) wasn’t remastered from the film assets the way TOS and TNG were—and probably never will be. Various folks are monkeying with A.I. upscaling (see video), but I still think it looks bad.

If I remember correctly, it would be harder (more expensive) to do DS9 from the film assets because by the 1990s, all of the VFX were being done on video instead of film, so there would be more to recreate.

On the other hand, it’s a minor miracle that the budget was found to completely redo The Next Generation in HD. It was a big home video project, during the last window of time when revenue still existed to support such an endeavor.
