Happy 60th Birthday to Star Trek

It feels crazy that it is Star Trek’s 60th birthday today. (This is going by the U.S. premiere of the first episode—it was in the works as early as 1964.)

It feels like we were just doing the 50th birthday. And for that matter, celebrating the 25th in 1991 with Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. And, for that matter, the 20th anniversary in 1986.

I remember my earliest memories of Star Trek, as that space show on TV with the colorful costumes where everybody seemed to be getting sick—I think because the first two episodes I glimpsed were “The Naked Time” and “Miri.” (For some reason, I remember being out at the mini-golf place on the Vineyard in the early 1980s, and the tiny TV inside the ticket booth was tuned to Star Trek.) It seemed creepy but I soon checked it out and was hooked.

It certainly is unique in sci-fi: a future where the good guys have won, and explore the galaxy for the purpose of peace and understanding.

It would be nice!
