Patrick Stewart

What to say about Patrick Stewart? What an incredible actor. I remember first seeing him in Dune, so when he was cast in Star Trek: The Next Generation, I thought, “Oh, that guy’s good.” What an understatement.

There’s a weird bifurcation in the earliest TNG episodes where it seems like the show isn’t quite sure if Picard is the lead—or if Riker is actually the lead, with Picard more of the police-station boss behind the desk. (This comes to a head with “Hide and Q.”)

But it was clear that a ship can only have one captain—and Patrick Stewart was one of the greatest actors who ever lived. That incredible voice, arresting presence, and his consistently interesting choices. As a performer, he had the most exquisite taste.

He was also, as we’ve come to learn, friendly, kind, charming and decent—with a rich sense of humor. His recounting of meeting Sting on the set of Dune and being oblivious is hysterical. (“You’re in a police band?”) He was one of the most accomplished Shakespearean actors of all time, but relished comedy. (Jonathan Frakes has said Sir Patrick’s favorite show was South Park.)

I never met him. It’s heartwarming to see all the stories pouring out on social media—and all of them good. Farewell to one of the all-time greats—and sympathies to everybody in the extended Star Trek family.

Oh, and bless his friends and family for maintaining his privacy during his final years. That is awesome.
