Buddy
Unicorn thumbs way up for Buddy, the demented feature film debut of my new idol, Casper Kelly.
In case you haven’t heard, this is a send-up of Barney where the star of the kids’ show is emotionally unstable, prone to murder, and holds the kids (and some adults) hostage in an alternate dimension (sort of like Backrooms, oddly) that consists a banal 1990s kids’ show.
The various teasers online withhold the true extent of the violence, swearing and insanity that this movie contains.
It’s hilarious, totally subversive, and actually—this is what separates the artists from the hacks—quite emotional. There is a mother-daughter relationship with real weight.
Casper Kelly is the mad genius behind Too Many Cooks, the epic, twisted parody (but more creative than the word “parody” implies) of 1980s title sequences that rightfully went viral:
If the Buddy theme song seems vaguely familiar, it’s because it’s a rip-off of Ducktales—but it works:
I can’t wait until this is streaming so I can show the kids! I think what I love most about it is the seething anger about our insipid pop culture.
